The Ancient Gods

Eris The Goddess Of Discord & Strife:

Eris is a deity with a malefic temper and for that she is known as the goddess of discord. There are two versions about who her parents were, according to Hesiod, Eris was the daughter of Nyx, the night. Homer, on the other hand, claims that the goddess was the daughter of the regent couple of the Olympus, Zeus and Hera. And, therefore, she was the sister of Ares, with whom the goddess has an umbilical relationship.

The goddess felt pleasure in causing havoc among men and even among gods. Eris was not invited to the wedding party of Peleus, father of Achilles, with Thetis, a sea deity. Several gods were present.

Zeus decided that Paris, the Trojan pastor, would have to choose the most beautiful. And his choice triggered the Trojan War. This apple became known as the Apple of Discord. Eris forged a union with the titan Aether and with him she had a malignant offspring.

The goddess generated 14 daemons, who are divine spirits, but all of them were nefarious personifications of the woes that are plaguing humanity. Such as Hunger, Pain, lying, hate, among others. And, because of that, Eris was also known as the mother of woes. Along with her children, Eris constituted the entourage of Ares.

The goddess travelled the world to help his brother, generating discord between men and nations, this way Ares could please himself with bloody quarrels. Eris, with her chaotic manners, kept wandering around the globe, causing disagreements and clashes.

Triton The Messenger God Of The Seas:

Triton is a marine deity, son of the God of the seas, Poseidon, with his wife Amphitrite. Triton has a fish tail and the torso of a man, like mermaids. He fills his role as the messenger god of the seas, taking Poseidon’s messages throughout his father’s domain. He used a shell, which, when blown, caused a lot of noise, to the point where it frightened even the biggest giants, but, when softly played, the shell’s sound could calm the sea waters.

Triton lived in a golden palace underwater, along with his parents. The god was often part of his father’s parade. He walked at the front, calming the sea waters, so that his father could smoothly walk through the waters in his chariot, followed closely by nereids and Oceanids, who were his subjects.

Like his father, Triton had several children, many of them were known as Tritons. During the adventures of Jason and the Argonauts, Triton met with the lost heroes, close to a great salt lake, which was one of Triton’s domains, and helped them, pointing to the right path towards their destiny. Triton continues to be worshiped by those who are passionate by the figures of mermaids and Tritons.

    Chimera The God Of Evil:

Chimera is one the most feared creatures in Greek mythology. The bestial being is a hybrid with a body and head of a lion, another head of a goat, yet another of a dragon, a serpent tail and, if all those things were not enough, Chimera was a winged creature.

Sometimes it was depicted only with two heads or wingless. But the fright for the creature was something shared by all. Daughter of the Monster Typhon and Echidna, the parents of the most tenebrous creatures of Greek mythology.

Chimera was seen as a sign of bad omen. The simplest fact of spotting or dreaming with a chimaera meant that something bad was about to happen. However, its reign of terror did not last forever. Chimera was devastating the region of the Kingdom of Lycia when it was confronted with one of the major heroes of Greek mythology, Bellerophon was his name. He was a protégé of the Goddess Athena. And, with the help of the glorious winged horse Pegasus, the Hero was able to exterminate Chimera.

The creature’s popularity among the bards and poets turned it into something known worldwide, however, during the Middle Ages, it was steadily replaced by the figure of Dragons. Lastly, Chimera can be seen as a representation of all the evilness created by man’s perverse imagination, the monstrous dangerous that he carries within himself.
